Daily Mercury Regular Fishing Column

Hi Readers, Andy from Andysfishing on YouTube here.

I would like to connect with you, by sharing some of my fishing stories, both in video but also right here.  One of my earliest fishing memories was when my parents, my brother and I, were dropped off on a deserted Whitsunday island for 3 days.  I was only 8yo and neither of my parents were experienced campers.  This became glaringly apparent when the high tide came about two feet into our tent at midnight on our first evening!  I remember this trip so well, because on the third day after many attempts, I caught my first fish.  I was so ecstatic I raced from the little creek to camp, only to have my father use it as live bait for some sharks that had circled him the day before.  In hindsight, I think it was lucky the handling broke before the shark was landed!

Andysfishing on Youtube is much more than a bunch of videos for me.  It’s actually a community of like minded people who enjoy the outdoors, especially fishing and adventure.  I welcome any feedback on how to improve the format or content of what I present.  The best ways to contact me can be found at the end of my column.

I also offer guided fly fishing charters, mostly around the shallows of the Whitsunday islands and mainland coastline.  Sight fly fishing is one of my favourite passions and I am always keen to pass on my many years (more than 25) of fly fishing knowledge to budding fly fishers.

Over the past month I have filmed such episodes as “Fly Fishing for Tuna”, “Micro Jigging”, “GT Popping” and some “Flying & Fly Fishing” as well.  To check these videos out, get onto YouTube and search “Andysfishing + (these titles)”.  I also now have over 300 videos, most of them in genre appropriate playlists, so you can watch multiple videos in one sitting on a particular subject.  Something you might like to do if this rain sticks around for a while.  Yes It’s finally raining as I write this article, and lets hope we get a good flush this year, because our rivers need this every few years to stay healthy.

During the the next month I hope to film some Saratoga fishing before the rivers flood and become un-fishable for a while as the wet season sets in.  Mind you I’m also hoping for some good rains so  the Barramundi get a chance to spawn before the season opens in February.  And I suspect there will be another “Big GT Jigging” video as well as more “Tuna Lure Fishing" and “Micro Jigging” videos coming up in January.

So what will be good to fish for in January?  Before the rivers flood, I suspect there will be some good Mangrove Jack fishing in the local creeks, I target these in the creeks at various tides, and rocky headlands. Live bait and lures are your best bet as they won’t often take dead baits. Remember, the fish you release today, you can catch tomorrow.

I would love to have you join me on this journey and encourage you to comment on my videos.

Despite having a fractured rib (that hurts) I will be flying the motorised Hang Glider soon. Weather doesn't get any better. Hopefully get a fish or two as well.

Bad day fishing

While filming yesterday I slipped and cracked a rib and cut both my hand and face. I guess now, I'll catch up on already recorded footage. Will be taking it easy for a bit.

Urban Fly Fishing for Trout, Tasmania, Australia

Urban Fly Fishing is Flyfishing / Trout Fishing 20 minutes from Hobart, Tasmania in Australia.  Fishing for wild Brown and Rainbow Trout.  Most of my fish are sight casted in clear or gin clear water.  This is river fishing at it's best on clear sunny summer days. I use various fly patterns which in time I will show you how to tie in my fly tying videos.  The evening rise is as usual the best time to fish, with Trout jumping out of the water and free swimming right under my feet.

Fly Fishing Brown Trout in Coal River Tasmania

On this day I Fly Fish the Coal River. Big fish in small creeks are great fun, especially if it's a section of river that is hidden and very few people ever fish it. I saw some huge Trout and caught a very nice one, trout are creatures of habit and I will return to catch the big fish I saw next year. A two foot long Trout is not to be ignored.

I fish with only dry flies and see every take.  With some cool under water video of the Trout you are sure to like this video. Filmed on a bright warm sunny day in Tasmania, Australia, the conditions turn on spectacularly for a great days fishing.

Swedish Pike Flies on Ozzy Barramundi.

After/during the floods the Barra are biting hard.  Plenty of fish and lots of laughs.
Run-off Barramundi fishing with friends at Wolf Creek (my Wolf Creek).
We fished the sunset for peak Barramundi action, this is the time of day that Barra come alive and feed ferociously.

Feel free to share. Enjoy.
